Tangier Shriner Center may be closed for regular events because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Shriners are still making a difference in the community.

Tangier hosted a Red Cross blood drive on Friday, April 10, with a goal of collecting 25 pints of blood. Donors went above and beyond, as 30 pints of blood were collected, potentially saving 90 lives.

Tangier has another Red Cross blood drive event planned for Friday, April 24. Make an appointment here. Learn more about the Nebraska Masonic Blood Drive Challenge here.

Fifty years ago this June, photographer Randy Dieter snapped the image of Shriner Al Hortman carrying young Shriners Hospitals' patient Bobbi Jo Wright, which went on to become our iconic Editorial Without Words. It inspired our Shriners Hospitals for Children logo, and statues based on the image (sometimes referred to as the Silent Messenger) stand outside temples and Shriners Hospitals for Children locations.

    Nobles and Friends,

We officially have a new home! After a great deal of planning and searching, we will be moving to a new building in the City Place Development in Woodbury, Minnesota, an eastern suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota, by the summer of 2020. This move is a step in our transition to an outpatient clinic model. Construction of our new site will begin later this summer and continue into the middle of next year. The current site will be sold as the transition to the new site is completed.

Ease of highway access, proximity to other local area amenities, first floor access and the opportunity to design and build out space incorporating the knowledge gained from 96 years of service, were all elements that influenced the selection of the site and the timing of this transition. Developing a new site is a special opportunity to create a patient-centered environment for the modern era. The new site will continue to serve children from a seven-state service area.

Shriners Healthcare for Children’s new facility will provide a wide range of services for children with orthopaedic conditions including:

Clinic Services: providing a family-centered, team approach to care. Patients will see specialty physicians, nurses, therapists and other pediatric-trained specialists in an environment designed for children.

Child Life: providing families with support during appointments through play and anxiety coping activities. The Child Life program also offers over twenty (20) camps and programs to meet the physical and emotional needs of children with orthopaedic conditions.

Radiology: providing standard x-ray service as well as EOS, which provides 3-D, full-body imaging with up to 85 percent lower radiation.

Rehabilitation: providing physical and occupational therapy to help children build skills, strength and mobility needed for everyday activities.

Scoliosis Specific Exercise – a specialized physical therapy program that uses exercises, stretching and breathing to improve a patient’s scoliotic posture.

Orthotics and Prosthetics: offering orthotic and prosthetic services specifically for children, including upper and lower extremity prosthetic care, scoliosis bracing and a broad spectrum of pediatric orthotic services.

Telehealth: including telehealth capabilities that enable video connection to other remote sites across the region, creating more opportunities for access to children in need of pediatric orthopaedic services. This capability enhances Shriners Hospitals for Children’s reputation as the largest network of specialized pediatric orthopaedic and burn telehealth sites in the world.

Surgery Services: All surgeries will be performed by Shriners Healthcare for Children — Twin Cities physicians at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, Minnesota, or other pediatric hospitals.

Concurrently, we continue our planning efforts to expand our presence throughout our service area. This expansion will take on a variety of forms that could include new affiliations with other healthcare organizations and individual providers, expanding the use of our telehealth technologies and establishing physical clinics, just as a few examples. We see this as an exciting opportunity that supports the Shriners Hospitals for Children’s system initiative of “Reaching More Kids in More Places.”

We ask for your continued help and support as these changes unfold. We commit to communicating information to all of the Temples supporting Shriners Healthcare for Children — Twin Cities. On behalf of the Shriners Healthcare for Children — Twin Cities Board of Governors, we thank you and your nobility for your support!

Please do not hesitate to contact me, or your local board members, with any questions or concerns.

    Fraternally,

    P.P. Roger J Robinson

    Chairman, Board of Governors

The Tangier Shrine received the following thank you letters from schoolchildren after the 2019 Tangier Shrine Circus last month. These children received free admission to the “Salute to Tomorrow’s Leaders” performance on Thursday, Feb. 21.

This is just a small sampling of the many letters we received.

The Tangier Shrine Hospital Office received this note from a patient's Dad who wanted to express their thanks:

On behalf of myself, my wife, and our entire family, I want to thank you and all of the Shriners for all of your assistance this year. You guys take what is a tough situation for us and make it easier! On top of that, the care we get at the Shriner's Hospital in Philly is great!

Attached are a series of x-rays taken over the past 6 months that I want to share with you. They show a continuous improvement in the spine. You can see that we started at a 36% curvature of the spine in late July and we're now at a 20% curve. The ultimate goal is to get below 10%, at which point we move to a hard plastic cast (and fewer visits to Philly).

We hope that you have a Happy New Year!

Michael Varro came to Shriners Hospitals for Children–Twin Cities after he was born with an underdeveloped foot. At the age of 11, he had to have his leg amputated. Since that day, he's become an inspiration to so many — working as a prosthetist for wounded soldiers and representing the USA in paralympic rowing. He says it is his positive experiences with staff and other patients at the hospital that led him on his journey to success.

Before and after his amputation, Michael worked with a prosthetist, Todd, to develop his prosthetic leg, which would allow him to walk again and participate in the activities he loved. He has now followed that dream and has become a prosthetist himself and is currently working for the VA Hospital in Lake Nona, Florida.

While Michael wished he could have served in the military himself, he was disqualified due to his amputation. But with great pride he says, "In a really cool way, I found this career and get to serve those that served, which -- in many ways -- fills my heart more than I could have hoped for."
